WHat it’s all about…

Great Bay Equine is happy to support our clients in providing pain relief and a quicker recovery from injury with the help of ESWT! Extracorporeal, simply meaning outside the body, Shockwave Therapy(ESWT) is a noninvasive, high-energy pressure wave treatment that uses rhythmic and consistent pulse settings to stimulate blood flow in a specific area. The purpose of this therapy is to trigger the body’s own natural healing response by inducing stimulus to the tissue that is affected. This stimulus initiates a healing response by the body and causes blood vessel formation as well as increased delivery of nutrients to the affected area and can be extremely beneficial for both acute and chronic cases. Being on the list of FDA approved Therapeutic modalities, Shockwave is commonly used in both human and veterinary medicine and is proven to help alleviate orthopedic as well as soft tissue pain.

When would we use it?

In horses, we commonly use ESWT to alleviate pain and/or discomfort associated with navicular syndrome, cervical facet stiffness, lumbar and thoracic vertebrae soreness, as well as providing support in recovery of soft tissue injuries (including but not limited to suspensory ligament, check ligament, and digital flexor tendon injuries). Depending on muscle mass and general size of the treated area, our PulseVet Shockwave caters to each specific site by providing multiple focused trodes with varying pulse power output.

Shockwave is typically covered by most insurance companies as a supportive therapy in the recovery process
