Dr. A. Rachel Roemer
Founder, Veterinarian

Dr. Roemer grew up in Bolton, Massachusetts and began showing in the hunter and jumper rings when she was 11 years old. Shortly after her riding career began, she told her parents she wanted to be an equine veterinarian and never looked back. While living overseas in India with her family, she focused on dressage and show jumping. As an undergraduate student at Brown University, she was a member of the varsity equestrian team for all four years and represented Brown at IHSA Nationals.

After graduating with a degree in biology from Brown, she went on to receive her DVM from Cornell University in 2010.  She then completed an intensive equine internship at New England Equine Medical & Surgical Center in Dover, NH. Dr. Roemer has worked at equine practices in Westchester County NY/Fairfield County CT and southern New Hampshire. She has a particular interest in sport horse medicine and lameness, but enjoys all aspects of equine medicine. Dr. Roemer is also a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA) and incorporates integrative medicine into her practice when appropriate. Client education is an important part of Dr. Roemer's practice philosophy. She is always happy to answer any questions you may have and she enjoys giving presentations to horse owners and groups on numerous topics in equine medicine and surgery.

Dr. Roemer continues to ride as much as possible. She lives with her husband, twin daughters, and two dogs in Portsmouth, NH.

Dr. Katie Larson
Veterinarian

Dr. Katie Larson is joining us from Colorado having completed an intensive internship training year in emergency and critical care, medicine, surgery and ambulatory practice. Following her internship Dr. Larson spent a year at a referral practice on the Western Slope.

Dr. Larson grew up in Ipswich, Massachusetts, a small coastal community north of Boston. She started riding lessons at age 8 when she caught the bug from her mother, an avid eventer. She showed hunters and eventually progressed to eventing through her involvement with Pony Club.

In 2011 Dr. Larson graduated from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts where she competed on the IHSA hunt seat team. After college she worked as an equine nurse at a referral practice in northern Virginia and developed a love for emergency medicine. She earned her DVM degree from Mississippi State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2019. Throughout veterinary school she developed a passion for working equids through her involvement with the Equitarian Initiative. Her professional interests include emergency, critical care, dentistry, and internal medicine. Beyond veterinary medicine Dr. Larson’s interests include baking, hiking, running, boating, skiing and pretty much anything outdoors.

Dr. Larson is excited to join the team at Great Bay Equine and to be back on the east coast closer to friends and family!

Emma Zellner
Veterinary Assistant

Emma was born and raised in Setauket, NY. She developed a love of horses in early childhood while attending local summer riding camps. Emma’s passion for horses brought her to the University of New Hampshire, where she graduated with a B.S. in Equine Business Management. During her time at UNH, she became a PATH Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor. Post graduation, Emma managed a small event barn in central NH before accepting a position as Equine Director for a large therapeutic riding center in Old Westbury, NY.

Her long time interest in equine veterinary medicine led her to shift her focus and became a veterinary technician at a large, NY based Equine Sports Medicine Practice. In this role, Emma catered to high performance show horses, spending her winters at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL. Working for a large practice gave Emma exposure and valuable experience to a wide array of skills that have led her to join the GBE team.

Emma is very excited to be back in New Hampshire and to have joined Dr. Roemer’s growing practice as a Veterinary Assistant with hopes to continue to grow her knowledge while sharing her experiences with GBE! When she is not working, you can find Emma enjoying time with her large family and her GoldenDoodle, Riley. Emma also enjoys the beach, hiking, camping, and snowboarding!

Carrie Fyfe
Veterinary Assistant

Carrie was born and raised on Cape Cod, MA. As a child, Carrie was always animal-focused, taking regular riding lessons and eventually purchasing her first horse (a sassy Appaloosa named Andy) as a teenager. Carrie’s affinity for horses led her to pursue riding and training opportunities across the northeast and Southern California with a focus on dressage and eventing.

Carrie graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a B.A. in psychology and a special focus in animal cognition/behavior. She then went on to accept a position at the New Hampshire SPCA as the equine and farm animal program manager. This unique position enabled Carrie to utilize her skills as a mixed animal veterinary assistant, rider, trainer and instructor to better meet the needs of a dynamic and diverse equine population. It was during her time with the NHSPCA that Carrie developed a passion for advocating for the humane and ethical treatment of horses in transition, focusing closely on managing their medical, nutritional and behavioral needs. Carrie first met Dr. Roemer and the GBE team while working at the NHSPCA, where they worked together on a variety of unique and complex medical cases.

Carrie later transitioned to the MSPCA where she developed her skills in large animal emergency rescue and acted as a liaison for law enforcement cases involving horses and farm animals. This diverse background has prepared Carrie well to join the team at GBE as a veterinary assistant. When not working, you might find Carrie hiking in the white mountains with her husband and three adventure dogs, gardening, baking or paddleboarding!

Heather Carey
Office Assistant

Heather Carey was born and raised in Western Mass. Her love of horses began early when she started taking lead line lessons at 18 months old, and she never looked back! Throughout her childhood, Heather was able to keep and care for her own horses on her family's property which only furthered her desire to work with animals every day.

After graduating high school, Heather started a job at a small animal practice but quickly realized she was happiest when she was working with horses. She found her way back to horses by taking a barn manager position at a large hunter/jumper farm outside of Buffalo, NY. Heather was always fascinated watching the sport horse veterinarian work up lameness' and perform joint therapies and she decided to pursue working as a veterinary technician. She was hired by a large veterinary practice that specialized in sport horse medicine and spent the next 10 years traveling to horse shows up and down the east coast and wintering in Wellington for the Winter Equestrian Festival Circuit.

While she loved the experiences and knowledge that those busy years provided her, Heather was ready for less travel and decided to move back to Mass to be closer to her family. She is very excited to have the opportunity to join the amazing team at Great Bay Equine, and looks forward to all of the new experiences this position will offer her!

When Heather is not working she loves spending time with her family, especially her niece and nephews, and going on adventures with her french bulldog Franklin!!
